The Mist is one of my favorite stories, I had the honor of illustrating my favorite scene from it in the recently published "Knowing Darkness, Artists Inspired By Stephen King" published by Centipede Press. Multiple detail shots of the artwork were used for the front and back end pages of the book as well as being featured in a double page spread within.

Hands Of A Witch

Two grotesque hands, old and wrinkled, wrap around a neck, squeezing tighter and tighter. Each finger stretches unnaturally apart and around, again and again, coiling down the body. Long sharp black fingernails scratch along the skin. The ribcage collapses, the air escapes in a deep horrified wheeze. The eyes drip blood, then spray like running faucets. Every organ bursts, every bone breaks, every muscle rips, the body closes in on itself like a burst balloon. The impossibly long fingers looping in an ever tightening pattern. A strange pulsing occurs, each finger tip like the mouth of a leech, the blood, the bone, the liver and kidneys, stomach and intestines, sucked through the labyrinth passages up and around, towards the ever enlarging hands, floating in the air as they make a disgusting wet sloshing sound, seeming ready to burst.

The fingers release their victim, slowly then quickly winding back into the semblance and size of normal fingers, if only bulging with some sick meal still oozing into the still growing hands. The shriveled body drops lifeless to the floor, an expression remains on the flattened face of intense unimaginable pain. The two hands float strangely like something from a cartoon, drifting through the open window and into the night.

Somewhere in the forest a dead witch sleeps, her body mutilated and torn apart, piece by piece. Lost are the legs, gone are the arms, eaten by wolves or taken as trophies. But the hands remained, one last curse on man, the nightmare duties given to them through the blood of babies and the hearts of men. Flying like bizarre bats through the trees, across vast fields of corn, into small villages where, drop by drop, bone by bone, the witch's hands return the life taken from her.

News Regarding Books Involving Stephen King And Thomas Ligotti

I learned a few weeks ago that my illustration of the Mist story by Stephen King will have detail shots used as the end pages as well as be featured as a two page spread somewhere in the upcoming gigantic artbook titled "Knowing Darkness: Artists Inspired By Stephen King" with none other than the director of the recent Mist film, Frank Darabont, writing the introduction. The book will be expensive but worth every dollar given the amazing printing quality and vastness of visual content in the book being published by Centipede Press. You can preorder the book here ranging from several hundred dollars for the standard version to somewhere over one thousand for the bells and whistles version. If you have the previously released H.P Lovecraft artbook from Centipede Press that I had artwork in, this book will be of the same size, but with more pages, and make a nice companion to that book.

I'm also incredibly honored to announce that I will be doing the cover to the upcoming reprint of Thomas Ligotti's "Songs of a Dead Dreamer" with the blessing of Thomas Ligotti himself. The book will be published by Subterranean Press next year. An article regarding the reprint can be viewed here.

In The Shape Of Man

Had a weird idea for a story the other night. A child is found dead in a bathtub covered in strange suction marks that look like they came from the mouth of a lamprey eel. After the child is buried, the plumbing back home starts acting weird, toilets overflowing, weird rattling pipes in the walls. Then late at night the mother hears the sound of heavy breathing coming from the dead child's bedroom. She opens the door and finds the dark outline of a small child on the bed. After turning on the lights she sees what looks like dozens of black eels slithering in the form of her dead child. She screams and they break apart into the shadows, making a wet slippery noise into the dark. The husband comes into the room thinking his wife is crazy.

Maybe a plague of unknown animals, digging into graves and feeding on bodies. They climb out of the ground to recreate the dead. The vocal cords emulated through the throats of monsters, a high screech that blends back down into lower decibels to sound like a long dead grandfather. A twisting undulating mass of the creatures stretching into an arm, the end a giant ball uncoiling like the head of a medusa.

I picture human shaped things covered in sheets walking strangely, some losing sense of the anatomy of humans and contorting, stretching, pulling apart into nightmarish abstractions of what resembles a person. The sheets wrapped tightly like skin around them, intended to hide what is underneath, writhing and pulsing in and out as the eels coil through each other in the shape of man.

It ends with the extinction of the human race, an unimaginable number of the creatures combined into billions of human designs, some far beyond recognition. An insane parade of creatures imitating people, all traveling towards one destination. A pilgrimage to someplace in Africa, perhaps the Middle East. The most ancient of human remains, recreated and calling to the others. A siren sound that shatters through the sky, the weather deforms around the destination. Storms grow in intensity around a vast towering structure. All the creatures build over one another, higher and higher into one gigantic shape. The human designs break apart into almost spider or crab like anatomies, the size of trucks, long limbs stretching over one another, climbing higher and higher. Lightning flashes on the miles high collage of twisting pulsating eel like creatures. Eventually it all stops moving, all of the grotesque creatures become solid as stone. The storms disappear, leaving a Godlike structure reaching miles into the sky. But somewhere inside something is moving, scratching, banging, trying to make its way out.

American Werewolf In London, Nightmare Nazi Demons

The above are screenshots from "An American Werewolf In London" one of my favorite horror films. I'll be adapting this scene into an artwork for an illustration feature titled "These Bloody Moments" in the upcoming second issue of Electric Ant. You can see what some of the other artists involved will be adapting in this brief article at the Electric Ant blog.

The bullet flare in the center will be removed. I originally had a more detailed scene in mind with decapitated heads, burning walls, butchered children and smashed tvs still playing the Muppet show. But I kept coming back to this door frame scene. I love how John Landis cropped these four nightmarish characters into that tight shot, still managing to show all four of their halloween mask heads.

Walking At Night/ Dreaming Of Monsters Underground

I was walking the other night, on the edge of town. I was crossing a bridge when I looked down and saw a large gaping hole in the dirt below. It was probably the size of a car and the bottom was hidden by darkness, so maybe it went down for dozens of feet, I don't know. But it made me wonder what could have made that hole. I imagined a large alligator like creature with dozens of reptilian arms and sharp earth digging claws. A long sharp snout with a twisted mouth that spirals around to the tip, a long crooked jaw full of small sharp glistening teeth that jut in every direction. The skin solid as a rock and scaled in some overlapping pattern, small sharp plates peeling backwards. The head would work like a giant drill, letting it carve through the ground. The eyes, perhaps dozens, scattered around the long cone like snout. The tail would likely move whip like, with some tattered mass of dark hair or dozens of snake like fingers, letting it brush the earth aside from its passages into the world below.

Here's one of a selection of artworks made for the band "Unholy" for their upcoming album "New Life Behind Closed Eyes" on Prosthetic Records.
The album won't be out for a few months yet but details will appear on the band's page at the label here and their Myspace page.

The concept of the image was given to me by band member Jonathan Dennison and I just went crazy with it until I ended up with the image seen above.

I fell in love with the power of the stark contrasts possible in black and white imagery but color is something I'm really starting to find interesting. I began fine tuning a unique process of colorization that while very time consuming, allows me to approach the color effects in a painterly fashion. I'm really happy with the glowing toxic warm colors of the tumor like worm things on the ground.

What it is and where it goes, no one sees and no one knows.

"I just heard about a pretty cool book that's being released in October 2009. Its title is Artists Inspired by Stephen King and it' s a very large art book, about 11 x 15 inches, with 400 pages featuring full color artwork from the earliest paperbacks to the present day. Most of the work will be full page and many of the images will be double-page foldouts, like Michael Whelan's Firestarter and Stephen Gervais' Christine cover.

The book is divided into three major sections with supplemental sections that are dedicated to individual artists. There is a Berni Wrightson section with about 55 works, and a Michael Whelan section with about 60 works. The book will feature all of the art from the limited editions published in the US, along with some of the limited edition artwork from around the world. Nearly all of that artwork will be reprinted full page, without lettering or logos.

And as if that isn't enough Gervais, Whelan, David Ho, Douglas Smith, Ned Dameron, and many others are creating all-new original work for the book as well."

My digital Lovecraft artwork from the Exhibit of Unspeakable Things will be appearing in this insanely huge collection of artwork inspired by H.P Lovecraft. The image above should give away one of the artists included in the book, H.R Giger. I'm excited to have one of my favorite authors taking part in the book, Thomas Ligotti.

One of the three panels from this work also appears in a hardbound Lovecraft Exhibit catalogue from the show at Maison d'Ailleurs in Switzerland. I think it's only available in Europe, here's a thread discussing it.

Comic Arf, Craig Yoe's 4th book in his series of awesome art and comics will be published this summer. I created half a dozen letters inspired by the shapes of demonic characters that will be appearing in the book. I'll be doing a full alphabet to match those I made for Comic Arf later this year which may or may not become a small art book. Details on previous issues of Arf can be found at the Arf Lovers blog.

I also have artwork appearing in the Beasts! Book 2 from Fantagraphics, coming later this year. And I'm creating 4 digital pieces for an art magazine in the shape of a coffin called Voida Voida that will be published somewhere in Europe this spring/summer. I have a few other book projects I'm working on but I won't mention them here until details are finalized.

Case Of The Missing Faces In Turtle Town

So I've got some short horror fiction I need to get out of my system. I don't write much, any feedback on this stuff would be appreciated.

There was a small town somewhere in Indiana that had the peculiar name of Turtle Town. It got that name because of the large number of turtles that lived in the surrounding woods. Nobody knew why there were so many turtles in the area but there were thousands of them crawling everywhere. A highway that passed through the middle of town was always covered in the remains of the nasty animals. The local shops were full of odd decorations made from the shells. A local artist had collected enough to build a giant skull, about the size of a car. It was put on display in a small park on the outskirts of the town.

Sometime during the mid 80's there was some kind of epidemic in Turtle Town. Rumors spread of a disease that did something terrible to people's faces. Those afflicted rarely left their houses and when they had to go outside they wore masks. It got so bad that the local drugstore started carrying a variety of masks when it wasn't Halloween because they'd become such a hot item. People didn't like to go outside at night because that was when those with the masks would go about their business.

It wasn't long before a rumor began to spread about the details of this affliction. Supposedly the people wearing the masks had no faces at all. Of course nobody believed this but it didn't stop some folks from talking about it and wanting to know just what had happened to the faces of those wearing the masks. The family members and close friends of those who had the disease refused to talk about it and became angry whenever it was brought up. So it remained a mystery, that is until some local kids found something that turned the mystery into horror!

A couple teenage boys had been playing around with a turtle they'd caught in the nearby woods. It was a larger turtle than was usually found in the area, about the size of a human head. The boys tormented and killed the creature. One of the boys claimed that when it died the turtle let out a human scream. They managed to pry its shelf off and underneath they found the face of old Mrs Reeving, except there were no eyes, just eyelids. And the mouth had no teeth or tongue inside, it was just the face. She was one of the first townsfolk reported to have caught the disease. The boys brought the unshelled turtle to the police station. The officer on duty thought it was a prank until he got the call that Mrs Reeving had died not one hour prior to the boys showing up, the same time they claimed to have killed the turtle.

Old Mrs Reeving's body was brought to the local morgue where it was discovered that she was in fact missing her face. Her head was like a lump of flesh, a chunk of raw clay that had holes poked in it for her eyes and nose. Her mouth was without lips, grotesquely revealing her old yellow smoke stained teeth and dark red gums . It would have been assumed she'd acquired some bizarre form of leprosy but for the evidence of the face on the turtle. A small circle of people in the town knew that something horrifying was happening to their neighbors and it had something to do with the turtles in the woods. It was decided that this strange and terrifying discovery would be kept secret among the small circle who knew of it until more details could be uncovered. The Sheriff, the police officer that had been brought the turtle, the mortician, a local doctor and the 2 boys were the only ones aware of what was happening but they didn't understand how or why.

The next day the Sheriff and his deputy decided to go into the woods to see what they could find. As though the turtles knew this, the shelled beasts disappeared. The Sheriff and his deputy couldn't find a single one. They spent several hours hiking through the woods with no luck until Ralph Beskcar the deputy, found one. It was the largest turtle they'd ever seen, probably half the size of a car. It was sitting in a small pond, its shell protruding through the murky water. This turtle had patterns on its shell that the two men had never seen before. It almost looked like someone had hand carved the intricate and almost facelike patterns onto the shell itself. The turtle finally started moving, it slowly crept out of the water and into the bushes. The two men followed quietly behind it, hoping it might lead them to something that would shed some light on recent events.

It seemed like hours that they followed the creature deeper into the woods. It was getting dark and they were tempted to give up but then they heard it. The sound of whispering was growing louder. The men drew their guns as they followed the turtle into a valley. They could make out a large dark shape in the distance that the whispering seemed to be coming from. The men moved carefully forwards, It wasn't until they were within 10 feet that they realized what they were looking at. A giant turtle whose head was as large as a full grown shark and shell the size of a two story house. It was sitting quietly and staring at them. They stood still in terror at what they had found. Then they noticed the shells, hundreds of them were scattered in every direction. It seemed that the large turtle had eaten all the smaller ones. And the voices they heard were coming from the back of the giant creature. In the dusk light it was difficult to make out what they were seeing but they slowly realized what was happening in Turtle Town. The two men walked around the giant turtle and could see that its shell was made up of human faces. Then the turtle lifted its head and let out a strange sort of laughter. It was the laughter of thousands of people, all coming out of its pointed beak mouth.

The men ran as fast as they could back to Turtle Town. When the doctor and mortician asked what they had found, all they could say was turtles. The next day everyone with the disease was found dead. Many funerals were held, the bodies were buried. It was accepted that whatever strange disease the people acquired had died with them. Within half a year life had returned to normal. The turtle with Mrs Reeving's face had decayed to the point that a human face couldn't even be made out of it anymore. The Doctor, mortician and two kids accepted that it had been some kind of weird prank. But late every night the Sheriff and the deputy lay quiet in their beds, both in small homes on opposite sides of the small quiet town but hearing the same thing. While grinding their teeth and holding their breath they could hear the large rumbling sound of elephant like foot steps in the woods outside and thousands of voices whispering, calling to them.

Old Man And The Tree

I was riding my bicycle out in the country yesterday and this story fell into my head.
There was an old couple lived out middle of nowhere, 15 miles to the nearest town. Jeb and Adna had a small wooden house that had been there over a hundred years, or so the local town folk said. Was a large old tree, stood not 10 feet in front of the house. The old man hated it. That tree was always attracting all sorts of strange critters and it had a strange odor that stunk to high heaven. Then there was the strange fruit that damned tree always dropping in the lawn. Couldn't eat the stuff on account of it tasting so bad. All it did was litter up the yard and attract more damn animals. And then Barney, the old man's dog, was always yelping and barking at it, day and night! Yes that old man hated that tree, hated it almost as much as if it were a real person. Some nights he could almost make out a smirking face in the bark, sort of laughing at him. Only reason he hadn't torn that cursed stick outta the ground was because of the wife. Adna wanted no part in the destruction of that tree. She enjoyed the shade it provided and said it had been there long before they were born and they'd no right to remove it.

So old Jeb let it be, but he knew the real reason his wife was so determined to keep that damn tree around. His wife was of the superstitious type and there'd been tales about the house they lived in from way back. Supposedly there'd been a couple witches that lived there who planted that tree with the blood of their victims. Folks claimed that story had been made up to explain the unusual shape of the tree. It sort of resembled a twisted figure with its arms bent back, a head that had a long crooked wooden nose and a head full of branch like horns. But Jeb knew better. He laughed at the notion and promised that the day Edna died, should she pass before him, he'd tear that damn thing down somethin proper.

Well come the next spring Edna died. She passed on account of a heart attack right there on the porch swing while Jeb was out building a fence. Soon as Jeb found her his first thoughts were of that wretched tree. He glanced over at it and could have sworn it was looking at him with something evil inside. After callin the funeral folks Jeb went out on the front lawn. Ol Barney was barking at the tree as always. Jeb knelt down and patted Barney on the head and said, "Don't you worry none Barney, that damn stick's days are numbered now."

After the funeral Jeb went home and sharpened his cutting axe. He sharpened it extra good since it was such a special occasion. Afterwards he took his axe and a bottle of moon juice then sat down on the porch swing with his dog. It was evening out and Jeb knew he'd have to get started soon if he didn't want to be out there till midnight. He drank into that moon juice somethin fierce, thinking it was because of Edna being gone. But deep down he knew it was to give him the courage to do what needed to be done for so many years. He got up and took that axe to town. After the first swing into that tree Jeb thought he'd heard a noise, sorta like a deep gasping sound. Barney was barking and ah hollerin more fierce than usual. But after the next few wacks he couldn't hear anything other then his own grunts and gasps as he cut into that tree with all his goddamn might. Old Jeb went through the trunk of that cursed thing and before long that sum bitch was crashed out on the lawn with a loud thud. Jeb wacked the axe into the stump of the tree and went on to bed.

The next morning Jeb got up and decided to finish the job. He went outside to cut the tree down to firewood. Instead of finding hix axe in the stump of the tree where he'd left it, the tool was lying on the porch, sticking out of the skull of his dog. Barney was splayed out across the porch with his organs spread all over the place. It looked like somethin had been playing with them! Jeb screamed and cussed and cried. He didn't know what to think but he just blamed it on some bastard kids from town.

After burying Barney, Jeb cleaned the axe and carried on with cutting that tree down to size. By the time it had started getting dark he'd cut that tree into a nice stack of wood that he planned on burning nice and long in his fireplace. He carried the first chunk of wood into the house. It smelled somethin terrible but Jeb didn't much care. He dropped it in the fireplace and lit the cursed wood on fire then went on to the porch to finish off that bottle of moon juice. Jeb sat in something soft and looked down to find one of Barney's eyeballs smooshed out. Jeb cursed out loud and tossed the eye into the lawn. All he could think about was the job well done cleaning that damned tree from the face of the earth.

After a few hours Jeb went back into the house to go to sleep. He looked in the fireplace and was surprised to see the wood had already burned away. Jeb thought it was curious there wasn't even a burned out husk from the chunk of wood but he was so drunk he didn't give it much thought. He stumbled into his bedroom and layed down to sleep. Before he could close his eyes in the dark bedroom he caught a glimpse of something moving in the room. As drunk as he was he figured it was his head spinning. Then he heard the sound of something scraping across the floor. More then something it was some... things! He heard the sound of things stepping around all over the room and under the bed. First thing Jeb thought was there was some damned family of rodents thought they could move into the house. Jeb got up and turned on the light expecting to see some dirty animals scurrying about. Instead Jeb looked down to see every single piece of wood he'd cut that tree down to, except each piece resembled a short fat goblin like creature with short arms and legs, horns, long pointed noses and dark black holes for eyes. They were all looking up at Jeb, sort of like they were waiting to see what he'd do.

Jeb gasped in horror and ran into the hallway to grab his shot gun, he tripped running down the hall. Poor Jeb sprung his ankle and couldn't get up. Then those wooden goblins took hold of him and pulled him into the living room with little effort. Jeb was turned over onto his back like a pig in the slaughterhouse. The goblins were all around him whispering and laughing, a dry sort of laughter that you'd hear the wind making through the woods during fall. Jeb lifted his head up just in time to see a blackened burned chunk of wooden goblin, the piece he'd tossed into the fire. It was dragging his axe across the floor.

Then old Jeb felt it, the piercing burning pain as the axe cut off his feet. He hollered and squeeled in gut wrenching agony! The other wooden goblins held him down as the burned one went on cutting him apart, first the feet, then the shins, and the knees, on up to the thighs and crotch. It then went about cutting off his fingers, his hands, his arms up to the elblows. Jeb was butchered into a torso and head before he was decapitated and every piece of him was thrown into the fire.

Strange Dreams In Strange Places

I found a giant half alive octopus washed up on a beach about the size of a house. Its mouth was gaping open like a weird circular doorway with sharp teeth. I was scared to enter it at first because I thought it would eat me but I eventually walked inside. While creeping through it became this weird organic labyrinth of passages inside the octopus's tentacles that somehow interconnected between one another in a looping design. It felt like walking on a giant sponge as the interior surface of the octopus was greyish blue and flesh like. There was shallow water on the fleshy ground with small strange looking fish floating near my feet. It felt like I spent forever trying to find my way back out of the octopus and at some point I sort of became conscious of myself in my dream and realized how bizarre the whole thing was. I think that's the only reason I was able to remember it.

In another dream from a few nights before I was wandering around a giant graveyard with hundreds of masoleums. I snuck into one and walked down a large staircase within a huge stone interior space. I walked down a gigantic hallway with coffin cabinet doors lined across each stone wall. In the distance were a couple of giant cyclops creatures that were pulling open the coffins and eating the dead out of the caskets like tv dinners! One of them noticed me and I ran back out. The dream faded with me running out of the graveyard.

Hob Bob - Journey Of The Head

Here's an example of the crap Hob Bob's head has to go through. A cave creature goes to sleep in a shallow grave with Hob lying on top. A cave slug slithers through Hob's head and pulls him along with it. As the slug slithers into a large smoking skull, Hob slips loose of the slug and begins rolling down a steep slope.

Hob's head rolls down the slope, stabs a cave giant in the butt, then is angrily thrown out of the cave and into a small stream where a hound like creature picks him up.

The hound takes Hob's head to a bone pit to chew on like a toy. The hound's head is smashed in by a troll like creature which takes off with Hob's head while catterpillar like creatures go about eating the bones clean of the dead hound.

The troll climbs up a totem pole and places Hob's head on top. It is immediatly stolen by a giant bird.

The bird passes over a large group of Tobos cultists and their giant monster slave that is normally kept in a maze as it is too powerful to keep locked up but too ignorant to find its way out of a maze. The bird reaches its home and drops Hob's head into its nest.

The bird vomits small creatures over Hob as it feeds its children. During the feeding frenzy Hob's head is bumped out of the nest. And finally, as if Hob hadn't been through enough already, an odd bird like creature decides to take a crap on top of his head.
